Getting into Fitness

Getting into fitness – Setting realistic goals

There are many reasons why people get into exercise. Whether it’s training in a gym, attending fitness classes, or taking up a new sport, you need to make sure the reasons are right for you. So, here are a few things to think about to help you get started:

Start with a positive mind set

Exercise should be taken with positivity and appreciation. Don’t let the fear of failing or making a mistake put you off. Remember, any slip up or mistake made is a lesson to learn from. Once you believe that you can achieve results, you will be one step closer to turning those goals into reality.

Take one step at a time

Exercise doesn’t have to feel impossible. You are not expected to run a marathon or swimming the English Chanel every time you work out. When getting started it is always a good idea to weigh up what is both mentally and physically possible against the targets you set yourself. If you are new to exercise, do not overwhelm yourself. Set the bar at a realistic level, at least to start with, that way you won’t feel discouraged if you can’t quite reach one of your goals. This is also good to help keep you focussed and motivated.

Set realistic expectations

Taking up exercise does not mean you have to workout 3 hours a day, 7 days a week and follow a rigid diet. It’s always best to take a view, ‘what can I do this week that will motivate me to go a step further next week’. Try filling your calendar with individual milestones to keep you on track and remind you to keep going. Not only will these milestones put you in control, they’ll also help you manage your time better and give you consistency each week.

Be honest

Asking yourself the tough questions can help you honestly evaluate what’s most appropriate for you. Put time aside to identify and eliminate barriers which have previously prevented you from pursuing your goals.  For example, if you have a hard time getting up the mornings, why not try an evening workout class rather than aiming for those 6 a.m. sessions.

The most important factor to sustain during your fitness journey is enjoyment. By doing this you can transform your workouts into something you look forward to, rather than something you avoid. Stay focussed and remind yourself of the good things you achieve no matter how small. To get yourself started, find your next gym outfit here.
